Leaking Toilets

Leaking toilets can lead to high water bills. It is easy to overlook a leakage as the dripping water is not always visible. First, you will need to find the leak, which can occur in various places in and around the loo. A faulty cistern can lead to an overflow, and water may trickle out onto the floor. The leak could be coming from a pipe joint or a crack in a pipe. In some cases the toilet pan or cistern may be cracked, broken or loose. Sometimes the seals may need replacing or repairing, or the float level might need adjusting to make sure that the water level is below the internal overflow.

Toilets can leak in a number of ways. A slow water leak from a urinal can lead to big bills. It is important to locate the fault and get some expert advice from a plumber.

Tip from our plumber: To search for other leaks in the toilet, place a few drops of food colouring into the tank. After some time, if you see coloured water in the bowl, it means that your flush valve and/or flapper are leaking.
