Unblocking Sinks

Sinks can easily get blocked by obstacles, such as food or hair, accumulating in the plug hole. A chocked wastepipe from a sink, basin or a bath is indicated by slow or non-running waste water when the plug is removed. Unblocking the sink using a plunger is one way to clear the blockage. However, in many cases the cause of the problem can be connected with a blocked waste pipe or drain, and a plumber may be required.

There are also many chemicals on the market that promise to clear blocked and slow running sinks, plugholes and pipes effectively, but these may damage septic tanks or pipes. It is always best to contact your local plumber for professional advice on how to unblock your chocked sink and deal with standing water.

Tip from our plumber: To ensure your sink does not become blocked, pour salt followed by boiling water down the plughole. Repeat this process every couple of weeks.
